The frugal saver

I have been thinking about the entropy of sound. How it fades away. And how you can repeat something said, but it is not the same. And I am comparing recorded sound to the written word. That you can listen to it again, as you can read the same sentence over and over. Even if you can listen to it again, I think it is entropic, how it resolves it self into nothing.

Maybe it is the saver in me that likes to record and write things down. But on the other hand I am very frugal about what deserves to be written down or recorded. But I am working on it (right now, as I write).

I do not know if there is a point of comparing the two. Why should they be dichotomies? It is funny how we seem to compare things, without reflecting of the nessecity of comparing them, or even questioning that those two things should even be compared. And that it is always two things up for comparison.

Showing sound

I have been thinking a lot about "showing" sound in an exibition. And also for the midterm examination.
How it takes more time than objects. This is of course the same for video. That you claim time in another way. I do not want to think about that already. I do not want to adapt what I do to an imaginary viewer. I want to make an hour of sound, if that is what I want to do.

This leads me to thinking about that a traditional art space might not be the best way of showing sound. I am not saying that it isn't, but there are a lot of other possibilities.

As I said, I do not want to think about this right now, but it is hard not to.

Rösten igen

I've started eyeballing the voice. I am reading a lot about the human voice. About voice prints. About what body parts affect the sound of your voice.

I've started recorded and editing the voice. That is my own voice.

By the way...

Can someone please explain what "a higher meaning" means?

Searching I found this amazing website. I am now being ironic. And bloody serious.

About changes

I am in some ways a person who likes habits, or structure, but in other ways I lack structure. One thing I am very peculiar about is where I walk. Like, from my home to the subway. I always cross the street at the same place on the way there. But I walk a different way home.

And that is fine with me. I like to walk the way I walk, and thats is the reason that I do it. It is a very conscious choice.

But the trouble with this is when I have company. I know that time wise, the difference will be almost none, no matter where I cross the street or which way I take. But it annoys me when another person doesn't instinctively want to cross the street where I do. So that leaves me nothing but.... telling them where to cross. Which is a very annoying habit.

I thought about this for the changes for this semester. To choose different paths when I move around the city.

So far I am struggling with my squareish mind, to agrue against my main argument: That I choose these paths because they are the fastest. That I made I choice based on logics. But that argument fails, because of how I don't take the same way going to and from a place.

This might not seem very exciting. But it is. Because I see things differently choosing another path. (Which is also an argument for NOT changing my paths. Allright, this is what I'm thinking: walking the same way all the time narrows down the input forced upon you, which leaves more space in your brain for other stuff, such as thinking, and not thinking. Taking the same road a thousand times makes me feel like it gets shorter every time.... So I eventually will spend no mental time, teleporting my self while the physical time stays the same...)

Allright. I will stop thinking about this and start documenting it.

A classic case of kill your darlings

I thought I wanted to work with language and power. But when I started working I came across another path. That doesnt really have with language and power.

I have thought so much about formless and how to do something that has to do with that. And how I could connect it. Theory, method and result. But Harri and Lea told me to stop thinking about that. I will off course not stop thinking about that, because I want to figure it out, and I think that it it interesting. And what makes this course exciting. But I also want to explore.

Life through headphones

My technical problems seems to be more severe than I first thought. I might have to my computer to record for now. The sound wont be as good, but it will be good enough.

I hear my life through headphones right now. All the sounds sound so different. Like a photograph. Showing the light in a different way, that your eyes can't catch.

Maybe I should do something with this...

Technical problems

I am having some technical difficulties. It is of course very annoying, but isn’t technical problems a part of the process as well?

Right now I cant really trust my little machine. Sometimes it doesn’t work to transfer the files on to the computer. I might have to buy a new compact flash card or whatever you might call it.

But recording is so much fun. And editing as well. So many choises to make.

I met a friend today who is working with radio. We had a good conversation about the freedome that I feel working with a new medium. It feels like I don’t have any rules to follow. Wich is also bad, because those ”rules” give you a clue to what will work out and what won’t.

But trial and error will tell you what works as well, won’t it?

What have I learned?

So… Last semester I did my degree project about the changes one can find in the syllabus of the subject swedish, comparing Lgr 11 to Lpo 94. I chose to do a critical discourse analysis. To put together my theoretical framework i basically had to start from scratch, reading a whole lot, because curriculum theory has not been that big in my education.

I came across Faircloughs critical analysis and Englunds conceptions of education quite early in the process, and I found their thoughts very intriguing. But. I could not put the pieces together. How should the conceptions of education work within the model for critical discourse analysis? And how should the conceptions of the subject swedish work within this?

I cursed. And when someone asked for advice on writing a paper that big I told them:
DO NOT CHOOSE A THEORY AND A METHOD YOU DON’T ALREADY KNOW…. Unless you want to make it hard for yourself.

For this semester I immediatley though that I would work with sound. I did not realize until now that I did not take my own advice.

But on the other hand. If you don’t do what you want to do, it will probably turn out crappy anyway.
